Wat is er toch aan de hand met grondstoffen?

Nog niet zolang geleden dacht iedereen, dat in verband met de schaarste de prijzen van de grondstoffen alleen maar konden stijgen.  Nu staan de grondstoffenprijzen op hun dieptepunt.

Er was natuurlijk een goede reden om een aanhoudende prijsstijging te verwachten, aldus Huub Teesing.  Veel landen in opkomst, zoals China en India, gebruiken meer grondstoffen dan rijke landen, die het meer van hun dienstensector moeten hebben.  De sterke groei van die opkomende landen, die nu al de helft van de wereldeconomie vormen, zou leiden tot steeds hogere prijzen voor olie, staal, koper en andere grondstoffen.

Dat gebeurde ook aan het begin van deze eeuw, maar sinds de kredietcrisis zijn de prijzen in een vrije val gekomen. Op dit moment zijn ze zelfs lager dan in de kredietcrisis, ondanks de welvaartsstijging in het Westen en ondanks de opkomst van landen als China, India en andere landen.  De prijsdalingen zouden het gevolg kunnen zijn van een afnemende groei(opkomende markten) respectievelijk lage groei(ontwikkelde landen), maar het zou ook kunnen duiden op een efficiënter gebruik van deze grondstoffen en toename van het aanbod dan wel de ontwikkeling van alternatieve hulpbronnen. Zo kunnen we nu al veel afvalstromen hergebruiken of omzetten in energie.  Moderne auto’s zijn op dit moment al voor meer dan 70% recyclebaar.  In elk geval is het prettig dat wij voor olie en gas nu minder afhankelijk zijn van het Midden-Oosten en Rusland, aldus Huub Teesing.  Toch zou ook de onrust op veel plaatsen in de wereld gezorgd kunnen hebben voor een lagere economische groei en prijsdruk op de grondstoffen, terwijl dat in het verleden juist andersom was.

Het blijft moeilijk om te voorspellen wat de toekomst ons zal brengen

Waarom lukt het Amerika niet om het gebruik van wapens in te dammen?

Elk jaar zijn er in Amerika schietincidenten, die eigenlijk niets met terroristische acties te maken hebben.  Dit jaar al meer dan 350 keer, waar minimaal 4 doden te betreuren waren. Het totaal aantal doden dit jaar bedraagt nu al meer dan 12.000 en als je het aantal zelfmoorden met vuurwapens erbij optelt, bedraagt het aantal slachtoffers meer dan 30.000 in 2015.  En toch lukt het de regering van Obama niet om met behulp van een wetswijziging, de verkoop van vuurwapens aan banden te leggen.  Een onbegrijpelijke zaak, naar de mening van Huub Teesing, die zijn oorsprong vindt in de “Bill of Rights”uit 1791.  Daarin wordt onder meer geregeld dat elke Amerikaan het recht heeft een vuurwapen te bezitten.

Daar zijn , ook in het recente verleden, wel beperkingen in opgenomen, met zelfs de mogelijkheid dat per staat te regelen. Het Amerikaanse Hooggerechtshof lijkt zich nu afzijdig te houden van de discussie, die na elke aanslag weer oplaait. De grote bottleneck is het Amerikaanse congres, die weigert maatregelen te nemen om de verkoop van vuurwapens aan banden te leggen.  Voor een groot deel wordt dit veroorzaakt door een sterke lobby van de wapenindustrie, die niet graag ziet dat de verkoop van hun vuurwapens wordt beperkt. Maar hoe is het mogelijk dat ook labiele personen in het bezit kunnen komen van zelfs automatische wapens? Volgens Huub Teesing kan dit wel geregeld worden. En als je misbruik maakt van je wapenbezit, dat moet die vergunning kunnen worden afgenomen en de wapens in beslag worden genomen.  Maar ook dat verschilt per staat, wat de zaak zeer onoverzichtelijk maakt. 

Ook in Europa is de wetgeving niet centraal geregeld: in Duitsland en België kan je veel makkelijker aan een wapen komen, dan in Nederland. En met de huidige open grenzen kunnen ze ook gemakkelijk Nederland worden binnengevoerd.

Er is al heel veel geweld in de wereld en dan met name in het Midden-Oosten. En natuurlijk zijn er industrieën, die daarvan profiteren.  Het geweld in het Midden-Oosten en Oekraïne houdt de wapenindustrie in Rusland in leven.

We zijn, aldus Huub Teesing, weer heel ver weg van een veilige wereld.

Parijs en haar invloed

Het was de stad van de liefde en dat moet het eigenlijk nog steeds zijn. Voor vele is Frankrijk het land van croissants, campings, voetbal en heerlijke wijn. Eigenlijk alle ingrediënten voor een rustig en prettig verblijf. En dan is er vrijdag e 13e… in combinatie met Parijs nu een tragedie.

Dit is wederom een dag welke veel mensen zich nog lang zullen blijven herinneren middels de vraag: “Waar was jij op dat moment”… En nog vele zullen zich dit ook exact weten.

Huub Teesing vind het vreselijk om te lezen en te zien wat er is gebeurt in de Franse hoofdstad. Het feit dat een paar knotsgekke mensen met een bizarre ideologie zulke vreselijke dingen kunnen aandoen is helaas een feit geworden. De schrik die veel mensen met zich meedragen de komende jaren is veelzeggend.

Het idee dat men solitair moest zijn en zich als 1 Frankrijk moet gedragen klinkt heel goed, echter blijft er in het achterhoofd van veel mensen nog het trauma zitten van zo’n aanslag. Een voorbeeld hiervan was bijvoorbeeld het incident een paar dagen later met een rotje (lees vuurwerk), waardoor een heuse “stampete” op gang kwam.

Dit aspect is veelzeggend over de manier waarop mensen bepaalde zaken verwerken. Een militair met PTSS (post traumatische stress stoornis) geneest immers ook niet in 1 dag. Aan dit aspect wordt vaak te snel voorbij gegaan. Dat is in combinatie met terrorisme voor een normale burger al helemaal wat anders. In het cognitieve geheugen van mensen worden dit soort zaken vrij snel getriggerd wat leidt tot een ander soortige reactie dan dat mensen zich voornemen.

Huub Teesing hoopt dat mensen zich gaan beseffen van de impact die hun daden hebben en de consequenties die dit tot gevolg hebben.

A companion is needed to join me in Rio de Janiero. I have bought two Grand Stand Seat Tickets for the Samba Parade at the Rio Carnival in 2014. This carnival parade, which happens just before Lent, is the most exciting in the world. Samba Schools parade before the seated public in a riot of colour and a cacophany of sound. I plan to attend the City Ball in Rio Scala so you would need to pack your formal clothes.
Later in the year I will be visiting the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival. This festival celebrates culture, folklore and religion. The six-day party is amazing, I love to follow the floats and the dancing costumed crowds.
I time my Toronto visit to coincide with the Carifiesta Caribbean Carnival. This Canadian Carnival is the best outside of Trinidad and Tobago. The food is amazing at the Toronto carnival, black-eye peas, rice and ice cold beer, delicious. Fish is barbequed on street-side stalls and served with lime and chillies.
My business is in textiles, importing and exporting and I enjoy seeing rich fabrics sculpted into exquisite, flambuoyant costumes. The headresses in carnaval costumes amaze me, the sparkle and feathers and the straight-backed girls who carry those usually heavy headpieces.
Is there a woman out there who feels the excitment and revelry of a carnaval who would enjoy some of the biggest street parties in the world.
Is there a woman who would dress in a carnaval costume, dance with the community along the streets and join me in celebrating the spirit of a variety of people in a vibrant environment.

Travelled a lot, never seen enough

I have seen much of the world. I've conducted business in foreign countries, mostly in the Middle and Far East. What a difference in culture and habits it is! If you want to do business, you have to understand and adjust to the way it's done in the country where you are a guest. In order to be successful, you need to respect the values and standards of the place you are in. For example, in India it seems like everyone is always at least 20 minutes late, so scheduling anything can be tricky - but you need to remember that it's normal there, a part of the local culture. It's also common to see your interlocutor wobble their head, a gesture that can mean yes, no, or a simple acknowledgement of what you are saying. Negotiating a deal in China is specific, too - your business partner will listen to you carefully, trying to find any inconsistencies in your offer, and then negotiate every tiny detail of your deal. Similarly, there are things you should know before doing business in Thailand and Bangkok, too. But if you adapt, all of these countries are great places to stay - with their beautiful temples and unspoiled nature, so different from Europe. It has always been a lot of pleasure to work with skilled and talented colleagues there.

Holidays in the European sun

In my private life, I prefer to stay closer to home. I have often been to Spain, and yet the breathtaking nature, beautiful cities and spectacular sights always surprise me anew. There's Barcelona with The Sagrada Familia, but you can also relax on one of Spain's many coasts. Each season in this country has its own beauty. If you want history, you should go to Italy - in Rome and Milan, the art of past centuries is still stunning. Tuscany is the place for you if you prefer excellent wines and fine restaurants to sightseeing. And now that the borders are no longer an issue, Macedonia can also be added to the list of favourite holiday destinations - with its rugged nature and the magnificent Ohrid Lake, it is a great country to spend your vacation in the Balkans.

With pleasure: the Caribbean

The Dominican Republic is sunny all year round, and the hospitality and genuine smiles that you see everywhere give you energy to confront the radiant heat of the day. With beautiful beaches where you can enjoy sun, sea and sand, it is a pleasure to be there. If you fly further, to Curacao, you will find many treasures and a pleasant climate. You can enjoy diving and a little break in the sun on the beautiful beaches there.

New destinations for the future

There are so many beautiful places in the world that it feels like I haven't seen anything yet. But I'm going to change that. If the opportunity arises, I will return to the countries I know and enjoy. But I want to find new destinations, too, and add new countries to my list of favorites. Australia - so far away, but a beautiful and fascinating continent, with many climates and beautiful scenery. I'd love to enjoy its tranquility and taste the fine wines. New Zealand, with both a subtropical climate and winter sports, and Marlborough where the most delicious wines are produced. South Africa and Botswana, where I would like to go on a wonderful safari before poaching will cause all the rare animals to be eradicated. Canada with its beautiful glacial lakes, forests, bears and whales. And I would still like to go on a jungle trek in Malaysia.

NORTH OR SOUTH TRAVEL

Business or economic activity is what dictates the development of a country and this also reflects in the standards of living of the people. Over the past few decades or so there has been increased economic activity in various economic segments locally and internationally. That said there exist variations in business acumen and type of trade depending on which side you travel to.
United States of America presents many opportunities for everyone seeking to live the American dream. As a mid 50 higher CEO Huub Teesing has often traversed both North and South America in a bid to explore the business opportunities that exist in this vast and blessed land that we have all come to love and respect.
